Brar violated Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing the ball at or near a player in an improper and/or dangerous manner during an international match.”
The incident occurred in the eighth over after England decided to bat. Ben Duckett sent the ball straight to Brar, who threw it back to the batter. Brar admitted to the offense and accepted the match referee’s sanction, thereby eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Brar went into attack in the first powerplay and conceded 26 runs in the first two overs. He then changed the ending, dismissing both England openers, Duckett and Jacob Bethell, in the same over, and finished with figures of 2 for 61 in nine overs. He was called upon to play the 48th round but grabbed his right calf and walked away.
The charges were laid by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns, third umpire Sam Nogajski and fourth umpire Russell Warren. Level 1 violations carry a minimum penalty of a formal reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points.
India leads 1-0 in the three-match ODI series. The second ODI will be played in Cardiff on Thursday.
