ENG vs IND 1st T20I match preview: England bowlers to challenge struggling Indian squad

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s much-anticipated debut and carefully exposed shortcomings on difficult wickets are dominating discussions about India as they take on England in the five-match T20 International series that begins on Wednesday (July 1, 2026).

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doschate said Suryavanshi will have to “go through the process and bide his time” like any other cricketer to get a place in the eleven. At the same time, he did not hesitate to say that the 15-year-old thug seemed ready to go.

But it remains to be seen whether the management will stick to its decision that Sooryavanshi should follow the process amid growing noise to bring blood to the explosive striker.

Ten Doescheit has been candid enough to admit there is a sense of mistrust in the camp after Ireland’s 2-0 defeat last week, which could well be the reason for drastic action.

Sanju Samson’s double failure against Ireland gives them the perfect excuse to leave opener on the bench and pair Sooryavanshi with Abhishek Sharma, who can be rescued by that 20-ball 49 in the first T20I in Belfast.

Ultimately, the move could give the visitors a good start against England in the five-match series.

Ishan Kishan also did not cover himself in glory in the two-match series against Ireland and was dismissed at 1.12.

So, the management could replace either of the two to accommodate Suryavanshi, but they will be contemplating the possible effect such a move might have on the morale of the missing batter.

Taking a cue from Samson, he performed brilliantly at the end of the T20 World Cup earlier this year and also scored two centuries for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

However, the think tank headed by selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir is not averse to making some strong calls and those who have doubts may want to re-read Suryakumar Yadav’s story.

They also made their debut with Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav against Ireland, leaving Suryavanshi waiting for his international cap.

Sooryavanshi is not a quick solution

But then the inclusion of Suryavanshi alone should not be seen as a quick fix to India’s batting problems, which have multiple contours.

None of the Indian batters looked comfortable in the Belfast conditions, which provided significant assistance to the pacers.

They looked like fish out of a pond as the routes to aggressive batting were blocked by the conditions and the accurate Irish bowlers.

In the second T20I, Tilak Varma seemed to thrive in the situation with a fifty but his patience too ran out after he played 46-ball cricket.

That impatience has been a hallmark of some of the other Indian batters chasing attainable targets like 183 and 155.

This required a slightly different mindset than playing on IPL tablets, but this was not achieved.

Indian players will have to adjust their concept and execution as England will offer more or less the same conditions along with a better and more experienced line-up of cricketers.

England have extreme pace in Jofra Archer, Josh Tong, Saqib Mahmood and Sonny Baker, and guile in Aadil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed.

The fact that the T20I average at the Riverside Ground is 138 and the highest is 195 hints at the dominance of the bowlers in the previous eight matches played here.

So, if there is a delay here from the batters adapting to the opposition’s attack and delivery, then England could escape with a five-match series in the blink of an eye.

India’s new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer would definitely not want to lose a second series in a row.

The England squad also has strong sides in captain Harry Brooke, Jos Buttler, Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Phil Salt and Tom Banton.

In both the T20I matches against Ireland, the Indian bowlers allowed the opposition to come off the hook in the middle overs after the initial catch.

The encore will be more brutally used by England’s batters.

In this context, India will need a more organized effort from the bowlers, especially the spinners – Axar Patel, Shedge and Washington Sundar – who have been largely ineffective so far.
