Dominik Szoboszlai is set to commit his future to Liverpool by signing a new long-term contract.
A preliminary agreement has already been reached with the Hungarian national team player after months of negotiations between sporting director Richard Hughes and his representatives.
Retaining the services of Szoboszlai, who has two years remaining on his current contract, would be a major boost for new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola and end speculation over the player’s future.
The 25-year-old midfielder has developed significantly since joining the club from RB Leipzig for £60 million in the summer of 2023.
He played a key role in Liverpool winning the Premier League title in 2024–25 and then became their standout player during a difficult 2025–26 campaign that ended with the sacking of Arne Slot.
Szoboszlai scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists in 53 appearances in all competitions last season, becoming the first Liverpool midfielder to reach double figures for goals and assists since Steven Gerrard in 2013/14.
Asked about his future after April’s Merseyside derby win over Everton, he told reporters: “There’s been no real progress so I can’t say anything new about my contract situation.
“As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I’m ready to go every day, every week, and then we’ll see. Of course, I see myself here in the long term, but it’s not in my hands anymore. I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy.”
Huge relief for Liverpool fans
There are still some finer details to work out, but the fact that Szoboszlai is close to a contract extension will be a source of great relief for Liverpool fans.
As negotiations over a new contract dragged on throughout the second half of last season, there was a growing danger that talk of his future would turn into an unwanted sideshow in the 2026/27 season.
If the impasse had continued until next summer, he would have reached his final year and Liverpool would have had to make a difficult decision: sell him or risk losing him for nothing in 2028.
With Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate leaving as free agents at the end of last season, Szoboszlai’s importance has arguably increased, both on and off the pitch, and moving him into the club’s top tier makes sense.
Without him, Liverpool would not have been able to salvage Champions League qualification after the test campaign as he was consistently their best player.
He has firmly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders and at the age of 25, this deal should ensure he enjoys his best years at Anfield.
Szoboszlai, who has captained Hungary for the past three years, is also a leader in the dressing room and his future is already set, which should help his bid to be named the club’s new vice-captain. The position has been vacant since Robertson’s departure, with Alisson emerging as another top contender to replace Virgil van Dijk.
