Mexico’s Isaac del Toro found it “unbelievable” that Slovenian Tadej Pogacar worked for him on the fifteenth stage of the Tour de France, which he did not win because, he said, he made several mistakes at the end when he was suffering from pain caused by a fall he suffered with 23 kilometers remaining.
“I felt fine after the fall, but eventually started to feel pain in my back and left leg. I’m glad I fought for the team and stuck to the race plan,” said the UAE cyclist.
Del Toro fell to the ground in the same fall that saw second-place overall Dane Jonas Vingegaard forced out of the race, so he slid to the temporary podium.
“It’s unbelievable that someone like Tadej wants to help me, it’s amazing,” said the Mexican, who saw the final climb as the Slovenian, the race leader and heavy favorite to win his fifth Tour, help him move up the general classification and secure a stage win.
“I gave it my all. I may have made some mistakes at the end, but I’m happy with how the stage went. I just need to improve the finish,” he added.
Del Toro is third, 5.58 seconds behind Pogacar and 25 seconds behind France’s Paul Seixas, with whom he will compete for the best white jersey among boys.
