A year after 2024 champion Barbora Krejcikova was given a tough test in her debut Wimbledon campaign, Alex Ila returns to the grass courts of the All England Club aiming for a more serious Championship performance.

She does so while already writing another milestone in Philippine tennis history: Eala is the first Filipino to be seeded in a Grand Slam singles tournament, entering Wimbledon as No. 29 and ranked 32nd in the world.

The 21-year-old’s rise was fueled by the best period of her nascent career on grass. Ela has a 9-3 record on the surface this season, as evidenced by her outstanding title at the Birmingham Open and her performance in the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Berlin Open, in which she scored convincing victories over top 10 players Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina.

“I’m honored to lift this trophy today,” Ila said after beating Nikola Bartunkova in the Birmingham Open final. “But winning this trophy doesn’t mean I’ll still be among the greats. So I am motivated to keep working and I am grateful for the role this trophy has played in my journey.”

Ela’s subsequent early exit from the Bad Homburg Open has given her valuable time to recover and prepare for Wimbledon, where she hopes to surpass her best Grand Slam singles result by reaching the second round of the 2025 US Open after defeating Clara Towson.

Eala begins her campaign against Renata Sarazua in the first round, with the Mexican tennis player holding a 1-0 advantage thanks to her 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at the 2024 ITF Cary Tennis Classic in the USA. The two players teamed up in doubles at the 2025 French Open, where they reached the second round.

If Eala clears the first hurdle, the spotlight could become even brighter. The winner of her match will face the winner of the match between seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams and Australia’s Maya Joynt in the second round.

A potential showdown with Williams would instantly become one of the biggest matches in Philippine tennis history, pitting the country’s rising star against one of the sport’s greatest players. On the other hand, the match against Joint will be an interesting spectacle after the tense final of the 2025 Lexus Eastbourne Open, which Ila won to claim her first singles title.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek could emerge as a potential third-round opponent if both players continue to improve. The pair split their encounters, with Ela stunning the Polish star during her breakthrough performance at the Miami Open before Swiatek returned the favor at the 2025 Madrid Open.

The road ahead is undoubtedly difficult, but this year Ila has shown that she belongs in such exalted company, turning breakthrough moments into consistent results and establishing herself as one of the fastest-rising stars on tour.
