Staff who created the corn design said it was done in honor of Sir David’s 100th birthday, which took place on May 8 this year.

In addition to Sir David’s face, an elephant, a tiger and a gorilla were etched into the 15-acre cornfield.

York Maze covers an area the size of eight Wembley football fields and is considered the largest maze in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

Creator and farmer Tom Pearcy has created over 5km of trails in his field, which is home to over a million plants.

Tom said: “I grew up watching David Attenborough, he is an icon of British broadcasting and I am honored to be able to contribute to his 100th birthday celebrations.

“Over a million corn seeds were planted in a 15-acre field.”

He added: “The maze itself is about the same area as 8 football fields, so about 10 acres of corn. “And on the other end we now have two acres of wildflowers.

“We’re trying to get into the Instagram generation. “We started the labyrinth in April/May and it will run until September.

“The attraction, which opens to the public this Saturday, employs 130 staff.

“As well as the maze, we have over 20 rides and attractions with food and drink and a large cast on site – so it’s the perfect summer day out for the whole family.”

Tom said he invited David Attenborough to visit the maze.

He said: “His daughter responded personally and said it was very nice to be invited, but he is naturally very busy and he is 100 years old, so it is quite a long journey.

“We hope he sees it.”

The Sir David theme follows last year’s Toy Story York Maze theme, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the beloved animated film.
