Many are hoping for a quick fix for bare lawn patches: An Instagram hack promises lush greenery with the help of coffee, sugar and vinegar. Experts warn of damage and legal risks.
Freshly seeded lawns grow slowly, especially in dry and hot conditions. The viral trick should accelerate growth. But officials say using this method could lead to problems.
An Instagram post advises mixing freshly sown lawn seeds with coffee powder, sugar, Apple cider vinegar and fill it with enough water. According to the article, this mixture is designed to improve soil quality, provide important nutrients and control moss.

However, comments under the post do not always confirm the expected effect. While some find the advice useful, most doubt its usefulness. “What is sugar for, ants?” one person writes. Another warns: “Don’t do this. You will only have problems… because he coffee grounds contains too much potassium despite dilution.” One user has already tried this trick and warns: “Unfortunately, I ruined my lawn with it.”
What do the professionals say?
- Gardening in July: Now fertilize your lawn a second time.
Sugar will help cut flowers bloom longer. But in Lawn care this is usually ineffective or even harmful. On the one hand, the plant produces its own “plant sugar” through photosynthesis. On the other hand, the sweetener attracts ants. Wasps and other pests.

On the other hand, coffee grounds actually contain plant nutrients. It is rich in nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, antioxidants and tannic acid. These substances stimulate plant growth and promote plant health. Hydrangeas, rhododendrons and tomatoes are especially welcome for the extra dose of nutrients. It is also suitable as a light fertilizer for lawns between meals.
Be careful with apple cider vinegar. According to the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and tourism (StMELF), food grade vinegar (maximum ten percent acetic acid) is permitted as a raw material in only two cases: for weed control on medicinal plants and for the control of individual plants. In all other cases, the use of vinegar in the garden is prohibited. It should not be used on paved surfaces such as paths, decks and borders, or on individual plants. Violation of this requirement is an administrative offense and may be punishable by a fine.
