The family of Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two, released a statement to local media ahead of Monday’s hearing, which runs until Friday.
“Charlie was a beloved husband, son, brother, friend and father,” said Kirk’s widow Erica, his parents Robert and Katherine and sister Mary. “Each trial serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children.”
Kirk’s parents and widow arrived in court separately on Monday.
“We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers and kindness we have received,” the family said in a statement. “This outpouring has sustained us through the darkest days of our lives.
“Out of respect for the legal process, we will not be making any further comment at this time. We ask for privacy during this process and tremendous grief.”
Defense attorneys have sought to exclude various pieces of evidence in previous hearings and have unsuccessfully tried to ban the use of cameras in the courtroom during the preliminary proceeding, which began Monday. They also asked Judge Tony Graf to remove the death penalty from consideration.
Robinson, wearing a light suit, sat between his lawyers at the defense table.
Prosecutors said four law enforcement witnesses were expected to testify throughout the day.
