Classic shooters “Call of Duty: Black Ops” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2” have been unexpectedly released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 via Shadow Drop.

For PlayStation Plus subscribers, each game initially costs just €19.99, with a full season pass available for €9.89 each. Regular fees are €39.99 for a title and €29.99 for a season pass.

Constant nostalgia with a catch

Activision is bringing these two milestones to current consoles without any visual or content changes. Developer Treyarch provides clean ports, not remasters. If you were hoping for optical upgrades, take note. The usual picture of that time remains.

Technical limitations in the multiplayer game are causing dissatisfaction among the community. The PS4 and PS5 versions are strictly separated. Intergenerational interaction is impossible. Anyone who plays on PS5 is left on their own. This splits the player base completely unnecessarily. The potential here was wasted.

However, the nostalgia factor is still appealing. Campaigns, classic multiplayer mode and especially the legendary zombie mode are fully included. If you want the DLC, you can get all the post-launch maps on top of it with the Season Pass in the PlayStation Plus offer for less than 10 euros. For fans of Nuketown or Buried, this is a damn strong argument.

However, the nostalgia factor pulls in from the first second.

In Call of Duty: Black Ops, you will become an elite soldier for covert operations right in the hot spots of the Cold War. Equipped with prototypes and special equipment, your missions will decide the outcome of perhaps the most dangerous era of mankind.

The shooter offers a full set of cinematic story campaign, classic multiplayer mode and cooperative fight for survival against huge hordes of zombies. This still works today.

The ports are a great opportunity to play two of the best Call of Duty games on modern hardware. However, the fact that Activision refuses to update the remaster and locks the game between generations significantly overshadows the leap back to the golden era.

Which map from the old days of Call of Duty: Black Ops will you visit first in multiplayer and why?
