A A British TV commentator’s on-air mix-up between two of hip-hop’s most recognizable figures was one of the most talked-about moments of Sunday’s 2026 World Cup final, as celebrity-filled MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, became the backdrop for an embarrassing case of mistaken identity and a wave of online ridicule.
With the eyes of the world on New York City during the match between Argentina and Spain, a clip captured by Channel X’s Hip Hop All Day account showed a British TV presenter misidentifying Pharrell Williams as A$.AP Rocky when the veteran producer appeared on screen.
“I think it’s AKA Rocky. Or A$.A.P. Rocky, sorry… I think…” the commentator said before correcting himself, although he was still mistaken in identification.

Pharrell Williams, the Virginia-based producer and co-founder of the Neptunes who helped define the soundscape of hip-hop and R&B in the early 2000s, and A$AP Rocky, the Harlem-raised rapper and style stalwart, have little in common beyond fame and a mutual orbit in fashion and music circles.

Sunday’s appearance at the World Cup finals came just days after Williams made headlines during his performance on the final night of Jay-Z’s three-date Yankee Stadium residency.
The run, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z’s debut album Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint, brought together a huge number of guests over three nights, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Usher, Clips, Teyana Taylor and Swizz Beatz, among others.
Williams made several appearances on medleys from his extensive collaborative catalog with Jay-Z.
During his final night appearance, Williams had harsh words for his longtime collaborator’s unnamed opponents. “They pushed the bear and then the bear cut his hair and now he’s wearing a helmet,” he said from the stage.

Adding a bit of irony to the commentator’s confusion, A$AP Rocky was actually present at the World Cup finals, sitting next to his partner Rihanna.
Rocky, who grew up in Harlem and has long been associated with New York’s cultural identity, had even more reason to celebrate the city this summer: earlier this season, the New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years, ending a title drought dating back to 1973.
The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson, defeated the San Antonio Spurs four to one in the NBA Finals.
The World Cup final itself was a landmark event that went beyond football: it featured the first half-time show in the tournament’s history, a Super Bowl-style production headlined by Madonna, Shakira and BTS.
