A few days before the announcement of her engagement to Felipe, in November 2003, Letizia Ortiz was still presenting the newspaper on TVE, the Spanish public television channel. Forced to give up her activities to marry the heir to the Spanish throne, the Queen never completely broke with the world of the press and continues to meet with her former colleagues, especially during awards ceremonies.
On July 2, the mother of Leonor and Sofia met at the headquarters of the ABC daily newspaper to preside over the ceremony of presenting the Mariano de Cavia, Luca de Tena and Mingote journalism awards. The awards, which have been given out for more than a century, recognize the best articles, the most successful careers and even the best cartoons in the press.

That evening Letizia appeared accompanied by her husband Felipe VI. While very involved, the couple didn’t hesitate to give each other loving glances and hold each other’s hands as they appeared in front of photographers. In his opening speech, the sovereign recalled that “there are professions whose true value is especially appreciated over time. Journalism is one of them, because news can belong to the day, and good journalism ultimately belongs to the memory of society.”

Letizia is covered in bows and diamonds
While Felipe ditched his tuxedo and bow tie, Letizia also wore black and decided to add bows to her look. The Queen did show off her The 2nd Skin Co. dress, which featured large taffeta bows on the midi skirt. The outfit has been seen three times in the past, most recently in 2023 during the Theater Royal’s season opener.
In terms of accessories, Felipe VI’s wife wore a large diamond bracelet and matching earrings. The surprise came from the shoes: Letizia was wearing Massimo Dutti shoes with higher heels than usual. However, for three years the queen appeared flat due to chronic metatarsalgia, which caused pain and inflammation on the soles of her feet.
