Alexis Mac Allister believes his optimal role is to operate as part of a defensive double pillar that new coach Andoni Iraola listens to.

Mac Allister is currently representing Argentina at the World Cup in North America as the team prepares for their round of 16 match against Cape Verde on Friday. The 27-year-old was among many players who endured a disappointing campaign for Liverpool, which culminated in Arne Slote being sacked as manager and replaced by Iraola.

Mac Allister, who remains without a new contract from the Reds despite having two years left on his contract, has been consistently linked with a potential move away from Anfield this summer, with Real Madrid among the interested parties.

However, the situation has changed since Jose Mourinho took control of the Bernabeu earlier this month, with Bernardo Silva joining from Manchester City on a free transfer and Real Madrid pursuing the possibility of acquiring Mac Allister’s Argentine teammate Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea.

Mac Allister appeared in all but two of Liverpool’s matches last season and occupied a variety of midfield positions as opposed to the number six position he occupied alongside Ryan Gravenbirch the previous season.

When asked about his preferred position, Mac Allister replied: “When I was young, I played as a ten.

“In Argentina I would play a lot, maybe in a diamond, so 4-3-1-2.

“I used to play 10th. Then when I came to England I found it a little more difficult to play as a 10, so I moved a little deeper to play as an eight.

“I like to do a little bit of everything and I try to help the team where I can.

“I like to be close to the ball and I feel close to the ball. The double six position may be my best position. But I can play anywhere.”

Mac Allister’s message is likely to be heard by Iraola, who will be tasked with getting the most out of the midfielder if he remains at Anfield this summer.

Speaking to ESPN’s Ball Knowledge, Mac Allister named Pedri’s Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain pairing of Vitinho and Joao Neves as his current favorite midfielders.

“I would say Pedri (is my favourite),” the Liverpool star said. “He is at a very good level and shows the whole world how to play football. There are also Vitinha and João Neves.”

“We played against them and they are really good and not only on the ball but also physically off the ball, they are very smart. I really like them.”
