TThe Forest Service has closed a section of the Continental Divide Trail/Colorado Trail between Twin Lakes and Tennessee Pass in response to a fast-growing wildfire that broke out yesterday on the slopes of Mount Massive, Colorado’s second-highest peak. The fire broke out Sunday afternoon and quickly spread to more than 1,000 acres, with its perimeter closing off the CDT.
Lake County, Colorado is under a mandatory evacuation order, and the Continental Divide Coalition and Colorado Trails Foundation are urging hikers to stay away from the area until it reopens. The closure occurs from CDT miles 1167.5 to CDT miles 1201.25.
“Northbound hikers should stop at Twin Lakes and southbound hikers should stop at Tennessee Pass. Hikers can resupply and wait for updates in Leadville,” the Continental Divide Trail Coalition said in announcing the closure. Redirection is not available at this time.
Tourists can track the status of the fire using the Watch Duty app, which currently lists the fire at approximately 1,000 acres and 0% containment.
