After the June heatwave: will there be new record temperatures in July?

After an oppressive heat wave in the last two weeks of June with record temperatures, there are more questions when looking at the weather forecast: will there be another heat wave in July? Or maybe we should rest first?

SWR weather expert Andreas Machalika can temporarily allay fears about a new heat wave: “I can immediately say that everything is clear, such a large heat wave with temperatures significantly above 30 or 40 degrees is not in sight yet.” You can rule this out, especially in the next seven days, and expect pleasant summer warmth with relatively cool nights.

We’re having an absolutely wonderful weekend. It’s just nice, clean, dry air, pleasant summer temperatures, refreshingly cool nights and sunshine.

According to Machalica, only vague forecasts are possible for the rest of July. Relatively warm temperatures continue to prevail in southwestern Europe and may move from Spain back to France. “And then we have to see if it can reach southwest Germany in seven to 10 days.” It’s possible that the heat bell will at least begin to form again next weekend. However, the meteorologist does not expect temperatures to rise back into the 40s. “When that happens, the whole thing will look pretty weakened.”

Decrease in temperature during sleep

A look at the dormouse rule, which should determine the underlying character of the upcoming summer weather, also offers hope for more pleasant temperatures. “At the beginning of the dormouse season, our weather changed, the intense heat dropped to moderate summer temperatures,” Machalica explains. This may indicate a trend in July: it will be hot for two or three days at times. The expert does not expect a historically long period of heat like June.
