Washington/Tehran – The war in the Middle East is back! According to the US military, the US launched “massive strikes” on Iran overnight. The Gulf state of Kuwait reported early this morning that it had come under attack from missiles and drones – likely a response from the mullahs’ state, which attacks its neighbors indiscriminately. The US military said its airstrikes were “in response to Iranian attacks on three merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz.” The military strikes reportedly continued for several hours and hit a number of military installations and port facilities.

The US military accuses Iran of “clearly violating the ceasefire.”

The US military’s Middle East Regional Command (Centcom) said on social media that Iran had to bear “high costs” for attacks on commercial ships with civilians on board in the strait.

According to unconfirmed information from Iran, the attack was aimed at the port city of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf. “The aggression shown by Iran was unjustified, dangerous and a clear violation of the ceasefire,” the statement said. The UK Maritime Trade Office (UKMTO) previously announced that three tankers were hit by shells in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran announces ‘devastating response’.

Tehran strongly condemned the new US attacks and accused Washington of violating the existing interim agreement. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister and chief negotiator in talks with the US, Qassem Gharibabadi, said on Platform X that the US attacks violated the framework agreement to end the war.

Early Wednesday, Iran warned it would respond to US attacks with a “devastating response” as the ceasefire between the two countries increasingly breaks down. “The armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will respond to US aggression and terrorist actions with a devastating response,” Iran’s top unified military command, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command, said, according to state broadcaster IRIB.

US extends sanctions against Iran

On Tuesday, Washington reinstated sanctions on Iranian oil exports that were eased just over two weeks ago. The revoked 60-day license was part of a preliminary agreement between USA and Iran. It should allow limited Iranian oil exports while paving the way for further negotiations on a broader agreement.

The United States is seeking to advance negotiations with Iran on the full opening of the strait. Previous attacks in the strait have prompted US retaliation. Then Iran attacked the Gulf countries. In peacetime, a fifth of all traded oil and natural gas passed through the strait. The permit issued by the US allowed the production, supply and sale of Iranian oil until August 21.
