Sony is currently offering a rare discount of up to 50 percent for PlayStation Plus members who want to cancel their subscription. The system works automatically, as reported by the first Reddit users who wanted to stop subscribing as a sign of protest.
The backdrop for the wave of layoffs could come from Sony’s July 1 announcement that it will cease production of physical games entirely starting in January 2028. Anyone looking to cut money off the platform now will be enticed by price discounts during the cancellation process.
The algorithm counters this
It’s quite common online for subscription services to try to retain customers who leave with last-minute deals. Sony now uses this automated method specifically in damage control mode. According to Reddit & Co., anyone who wants to cancel their annual subscription will be offered a 25 to 33 percent discount. With a three-month membership, the system costs even half as much.
This is a slap in the face to loyal existing customers. Typically, discount campaigns such as Play Days are aimed almost exclusively at new customers or returning customers. Now all you have to do is hit the cancel button to get the best deal of the year.
Controversy in protest
This is a problem for anyone who wants to make a real statement against PlayStation’s purely digital future. Anyone who accepts the offer to save money is sabotaging their own protest. Sony will still get the money eventually.
For players whose subscriptions are about to expire anyway and who simply want to pay less, this news is a tangible benefit. Bypassing the termination option on a PSN account can currently be paid for in cash in Euros. It remains to be seen whether Sony will keep the system running if the rush becomes too great.
The move shows that protests following the announced end of the drive in 2028 are having an effect. The campaign seems uncoordinated and contradicts Sony’s other pricing policies over the past few months. Real protest looks different than discounted accommodation.
