West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari on Tuesday visited Baruipur and met the parents of a teenage girl in connection with the rape and murder case.
The body of a teenage girl was found in a pond at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district adjacent to Kolkata on Sunday. After the rape, she was packed in a bag and thrown into a pond while still alive.
After this, the residents of the area became angry and beat the young man to death. Three people have been arrested in the rape and murder case, including the main accused Anand Sardar, Prabhash Mandal and Diwakar Sardar. On Monday, the body of another person was found in the same pond.
Before traveling to Baruipur, Shubhendu held a meeting with members of the SIT formed to probe the incident at the State Secretariat and inquired about the progress of the investigation.
Officials said the Chief Minister was in Baruipur to take stock of the investigation and meet the victim’s parents and local public representatives.
The Chief Minister immediately reached the office of the Superintendent of Police, met the girl’s parents there and assured them that he would complete the investigation at the earliest and impose the harshest punishment on the culprits.
According to police sources, the Chief Minister also assured the family of the government’s full support. The Chief Minister was also accompanied by Director General of Police Siddhant Gupta.
Earlier, Minister Agnimitra Pal and BJP leader Locket Chatterjee met with the girl’s parents. Following this, MP Siuli Saha and former minister Chandrima Bhattacharya also arrived at the spot under the leadership of Ritabrata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress.
