Ukrainian drones struck a major oil refinery in the western Siberian city of Omsk, in what appears to be one of Kyiv’s biggest attacks on Russian territory since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine’s General Staff said Monday that the strike caused a fire at the facility, which is located nearly 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) from Ukrainian territory and near Russia’s border with Kazakhstan.
The attack, confirmed by local Russian officials, is further evidence of Kyiv’s expanding long-range drone capabilities and comes on the eve of a crucial NATO summit. Heads of state from 32 countries are expected in the Turkish capital from Tuesday for a two-day conference.
“Today our long-term sanctions reached the oil refinery in Omsk – almost 2,500 kilometers from Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his daily evening address, according to a translation.
“Upgraded Fire Point drones have made Siberia accessible to Ukrainian precision. This is a significant blow to Russia’s oil economy and an important achievement for the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” Zelensky said.
Kyiv-based Fire Point is a leading Ukrainian defense technology company specializing in unmanned and missile systems for modern precision warfare.

The Omsk refinery is the largest of 11 Russian gasoline producers hit by Ukrainian forces, Ukrainian military officials said.
The plant is estimated to have a processing capacity of over 21 million metric tons of crude oil per year and specializes in the production of a wide range of fuels, lubricants and petrochemical products.
The governor of the Omsk region, Vitaly Khotsenko, reported on Monday on Telegram that emergency services were working at the site of the Ukrainian attack on the facility. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Trump spoke with Putin and Zelensky
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian oil facilities in recent months, seeking to deplete President Vladimir Putin’s military budget as the Kremlin’s more than four-year war drags on.
Ukraine’s president said on Monday that the country’s armed forces were also able to strike Russian oil facilities in the Yaroslavl region, as well as in other areas of the neighboring country.
Russia launched a missile and drone attack on Kyiv early Monday, killing at least 19 people, authorities said. The attack follows another deadly attack on Ukraine’s capital last week.
