Win or lose today in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, German tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff has already made history. At 36, he became the oldest man in the Open Era to reach his first major quarterfinal.
“I would say it’s incredible,” “Struffy” Struff said after the match, according to ATPTour.com. “Thirty-six years… Fourth round (first time). Grand Slam quarter-finals (first time). You should never give up.” He faces a tough road to his first semi-final as he faces defending champion Jannik Sinner, who has won all three of his previous meetings.
Cheering for him from Germany will be his wife Madeleine Struff, who had to return home after the first round match. “My wife was there until Wednesday and saw the first match. When I had the second, she had to get on the plane at the same time,” he said. Jan-Lennard added: “The children are at home, they have school, and we have compulsory education in Germany. That’s why it’s difficult to come here… Tomorrow we have a party at the kindergarten. Everything is fine as it is. But I’m looking forward to seeing them all again.” Here’s what you need to know about Jan-Lennard Struff’s wife:
