Although he is under 40 years old, Michael B. Jordan has been acting almost his entire life, earning roles in Wire And Friday night lights before landing his breakout role in the sci-fi thriller Chroniclealong with Dane DeHaan.
From a young age, Jordan quickly began appearing in films that were unsuccessful in terms of quality, but his career moved to the next level thanks to his collaboration with writer-director Ryan Coogler.
Coogler directed five films, and Jordan starred in all of them, starting with Fruitvale Stationwhich helped him establish himself as a legitimate actor to the last Sinnerswhich earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor. However, the most influential of the films the duo made together may have been their second project together. Creedwhat helped restart Rocky The franchise centers on new character Adonis Creed, the son of Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed from the original films.
Creed got past the ridiculous storyline in Rocky IVwhere Apollo was killed off to show how his son grew up without a father, and Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky was brought back to become Adonis’ mentor. Just like Stallone started directing Rocky sequels, after starring in and writing the original, Jordan was given the opportunity to make his directorial debut with Creed III.
To differentiate the third installment of the spin-off from everything that came before it, Jordan used his love of anime and other Japanese animated films to create stylized action scenes and inspired the visual aesthetic.
So, it’s no surprise that he’s also a fan of the brilliant Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, whose credits include a slew of films that would be considered some of the best animated films ever made, were it not for Jordan, the 1997 fantasy epic. Princess Mononoke his all time favorite.
“It’s really something special,” he said. “Every time it comes on, I watch it. I have to experience something like that. Right down to the movement of the smoke and the flames in that movie, it’s beautiful.”

Princess Mononoke was one of Miyazaki’s most ambitious films, as it combined his mythological world-building with Castle in the skyand combined it with a powerful coming-of-age story intertwined with an environmental message of spirituality and nature. Even though the film was specifically based on Japanese myths, it ultimately became one of Miyazaki’s biggest overseas hits, gaining much popularity thanks to the 1999 English dub, which featured voice actors such as Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver and Billy Bob Thornton.
Princess Mononoke is such a typical “hero’s journey” story that it’s no surprise that it inspired Jordan to play such great heroes as Adonis, Bryan Stevenson, Just mercyand even Johnny Storm in the ill-fated Fantastic Four reboot from 2015.
Considering how directly related Princess Mononoke and other anime Creed III It will be interesting to see how this impacts Jordan’s next project as a director. He’s both starring and directing the remake. Thomas Crown casein which he will play the title character, previously played by Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan in the 1968 and 1999 films respectively.
