PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Dozens of people gathered in Philadelphia on July 4 to bury a time capsule in honor of America’s 250th birthday.

Organizers of the America’s Time Capsule ceremony collected items from all three branches of government, all 50 states, five U.S. territories and Washington, D.C., to be buried in a pit at Independence National Historical Park.

“The time capsule we are burying today is more than an artifact. This is a message conveyed through time. It reflects a nation that is still struggling, still arguing, still building, still expanding the meaning of its founding ideals,” Steve Sims, superintendent of Independence National Historical Park, said at the burial ceremony Saturday.

The commemorative event is dedicated to the semi-quincentenary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Inside are an iPhone, a 3D rendering of Abraham Lincoln’s hand and an image of the Phillies’ 2026 season-opening lineup.

It will remain sealed for 250 years, until 2276.
