Masked faces, military pants, Confederate flags and the slogan “Take Back America!” “Several hundred white supremacists marched in Washington to mark the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States this Saturday. They arrived Saturday morning at the capital’s main train station ahead of the parade. No incidents or arrests were reported.
“There’s not a single position that they stand for that I can agree with. But one of the founding principles of the United States, and what makes democracy messy, is freedom of expression,” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum responded in an interview with CNN on Sunday.
“These little things are rather the exception”
“I see a lot of things that I personally might find offensive and objectionable. But in America, freedom of speech is allowed,” he added. “We are in a country where someone can run and be elected calling themselves a communist, even though that is what our nation fought against,” the minister said.
“There are many things in history that can come to the surface, but the good thing is that these little things, I think, are rather the exception,” he said, hailing “unity around the country and the flag” as the United States celebrated its 250th anniversary of independence.
