Katie Swan (GBR) celebrates as she wins the match against Irina-Camellia Begu

Swan first came to prominence when she reached the Australian Open girls’ singles final at age 15.

A year later she became the youngest player ever to represent Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup.

But her career never took off as many expected.

Swan suffered from constant back injuries and often forced herself to play in severe pain. By the end of 2024 it had reached a critical point.

“I didn’t play tennis anymore. I was coaching in the United States and wasn’t sure there was a way back into professional tennis,” she told BBC Radio 5 live.

“I have never been disappointed in this sport. I just couldn’t stay healthy long enough.

“I was trying to have fun I coach and do whatever I can to make some money, but at that moment it didn’t bring me much satisfaction.

“I knew I could give so much more if I could find a way to solve my health problems.”

Luckily for Swan, she found a doctor who could help. Unfortunately, the treatment she needed was “excruciating.”

“He ended up giving me nerve treatment. It was very painful,” she said.

“He discovered that my nerves were not functioning properly. It wasn’t very pleasant, but I spent a couple of weeks with him and it really helped a lot.”
