Germany is the world champion! Handball players they were unstoppable at the Under-20 World Cup, even in the final in Denmark. 33:26 (15:14) – a great hour to play handball. What a performance from our DHB girls!

A good omen: the German U20s won their last world title in 2008, also in the final against Denmark. But today the Scandinavians are coming into the game better: at the World Cup they have been extremely strong in attack so far. Germany wants to defend against him with a high defense, but initially trails 2:5. But, as often happens at the tournament, the DHB girls do not allow themselves to give up and fight their way back. Just a few minutes later they turned the tide of the game and even took an 8-7 lead thanks to Chiara Rohr (19). Both teams are now defending better and the game is getting closer. Goalkeepers on both sides stood firm, but Germany went into the break with a 15:14 lead.
World Handball Championship: Germany wins gold against Denmark!
After the break the final remains close. Choosing DHB shows strong nerves and is slowly but surely gaining strength! 19:17 after 40 minutes: This is getting interesting! Super goalkeeper Lena Lindemann (20) made twelve saves and even scored into an empty Danish goal with a quarter of an hour left. Farrelle Nyinkew (19) makes it 30:25 with six minutes to go – preliminary decision? DHB coach Christopher Nordmeyer (58) urges his team: “Don’t lose your composure!” But she doesn’t: as if this is the most normal thing in the world, handball players calmly play out the World Cup final. Denmark risks everything and opens up, but it has no chance: Germany deserved to win the World Cup with a score of 33:26! Just last year, many players already won gold at the European Championship as part of the U19 team. But now the celebration knows no bounds; the players find themselves in each other’s arms within a few seconds after the final whistle. At 14:40. German time, DHB captain Marlene Kern (20) and goalkeeper Lena Lindemann lift the World Cup trophy – the party can begin!
“This double gold is historic!”
“My impression was that we had so many strengths today that Denmark couldn’t adapt to all of them,” said U20 coach Christopher Nordmeyer. “We won this World Cup as a team where all 16 players can be important. Everyone played an outstanding role in this gold medal.” Ingo Meckes (50), DHB sporting director, adds: “This double gold is historic and I would like to warmly congratulate the entire team and the coaching staff of Christopher Nordmeyer.” Women’s coach Markus Gaugisch (52) is equally impressed: “This team fully deserved to be world champions with an outstanding performance throughout the tournament. They played incredibly well and with flexibility. They found a response against any system. They also played very well in attack. Great, congratulations again!”
