Well… the Women’s Wimbledon draw was definitely turned on its head yesterday. With Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina losing in straight sets, Jessica Pegula is now ranked second overall behind Aryna Sabalenka.
We got chocolates with Pegula in her last round, confidently lining up Jessica Buzas Maneiro and covering the playing handicap. While she may not be performing at her absolute top level, she has shown that she has exceptional control in matches where she has the power advantage, especially during this grass season. This is the kind of form that I find attractive: good wins, but still room for improvement over the course of two weeks.
She’ll need to be at her best if we get the best version of Iva Jovic. The young American has been one of the revelations of 2026 and now has another strong Grand Slam performance on her resume. However, her third round victory did not come without difficulties, as she needed a tense third set to get over the line against Ekaterina Alexandrova, who had emerged as the clear favourite.
I want to be fair to Jovic, who I have a lot of time watching, but it’s worth noting that she had to save up 14/18 break points just to get over the line against Alexandrova. In my opinion, that level simply cannot match Pegula, especially with the way she hits the net on her serve and plays with one of the highest levels of confidence I can remember from her in years.
In my opinion, this looks like a match where Pegula’s strengths will come to the fore. I have this handicap at 4.5/5 game handicap considering how highly I rate Pegula in this place. So I’m very happy to enter the -3.5 game handicap here.
