Lee Greenwood is proud to be an American.
The “God Bless the USA” singer told Fox News Digital that he is “very proud” to stand alongside President Donald Trump on the Fourth of July and is “honored and humbled” to be part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
“I’m a farm kid from California, and music has been in my life since I was 10, 11, 12 years old,” he said. “But it was when I was touring the United States, coast to coast, that I realized there was so much in America that we hadn’t heard. So I wrote the songs “God Bless the USA” and “Proud to be an American.” And here we are at the 250th anniversary of this great country. I’m so honored and proud to be able to sing about it. And I will be with the President of the United States in Washington, D.C., many more times.”

Responding to those previously withdrawing from the event, Greenwood stressed that it should not be political.
“Well, I’m really sorry. You know, in this case there is no politics here,” he explained. “This is a celebration of America, this wonderful place that we have for 250 years of our republic.”

“We need to celebrate America, and I’m sorry they won’t perform,” he continued. “However, I will support our fantastic President… July 4th in Washington, D.C.”
Greenwood said he supported Trump “from the beginning” and he and his wife Kimberly Payne, who he said competed in the Miss USA pageant for nearly 30 years, were long friends with the president.
“I’m just very proud to stand next to a man that I value and that runs our country,” he said.

Asked what lessons from our history future generations should remember, he responded: “First of all, people say this country is so divided. Don’t you remember the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, of course Vietnam at a time when we just had to fight to find out who we were?”

But Greenwood said he knows who we are.
“We are the only free country in the world that will take care of everyone else,” he said. “And as we approach our country’s 250th anniversary, there are new challenges ahead. But God bless this wonderful place.”
