Gary Sinise’s distinguished career in film, television, theater and philanthropy spans five decades and is marked by a deep commitment to storytelling, service and purpose. His journey began in 1974 when, at just 18 years old, he co-founded the Chicago-based Steppenwolf Theater Company, which has become recognized as one of the leading theater companies in the world.

Sinise is best known for his iconic portrayal of wounded Vietnam War veteran Lt. Dan Taylor in the award-winning film. Forrest Gump this brought him widespread recognition and deepened his connections within the military community. Sinise has been nominated for Oscars, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, as well as a National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor. His extensive film work includes Apollo 13, ransom, Green Mile, Of mice and men Mission to Mars, Human Stain, I still believeAnd Joe Bell.

On television for nine seasons, Sinise played Detective Mac Taylor on Crime Scene: New Yorksymbolizing his support, closeness and appreciation for first responders. Recent television work also includes Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Netflix series 13 reasons why. With numerous award nominations to his name, Sinise is an Emmy, Golden Globe and two-time Screen Actors Guild Award winner for his roles in Truman And George Wallace.

For more than 40 years, Sinise has been a dedicated advocate for America’s military personnel, veterans and their families. Inspired by his own family serving in World War I and Afghanistan, Sinise began providing support in the early 1980s, working with Vietnam veterans in his Chicago area before a lifelong role with Lt. Dan cemented Gary’s legacy as a champion of those who courageously served our country. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, his dedication grew into a lifelong mission of service.

In 2011, Sinise founded the Gary Sinise Foundation, whose mission is to serve our country by honoring our nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need. The Foundation provides critical support including building customized mortgage homes for our nation’s most seriously wounded heroes, providing equipment grants to fire and police departments across the country, educating the next generation through trips to the National WWII Museum, the National Medal of Honor Museum, the Flight 93 Memorial, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum and the Pentagon, supporting the families of our fallen through community programs, hosting free concerts with Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band for nearly 25 years. lifting the spirits of our veterans, first responders, the families of our fallen heroes and so many more.

In recognition of his humanitarian work, Sinise has received numerous distinguished awards, including the Presidential Citizens Medal, the Department of Defense Spirit of Hope Award, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and the Sylvanus Thayer Award from the West Point Alumni Association. He was also named an Honorary Marine, an Honorary Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy, and an Honorary Battalion Chief of the New York City Fire Department. Sinise also works with organizations including the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

His autobiography was published in 2019. The Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Servicebecame a New York Times bestseller, sharing the story of his personal transformation and lifelong commitment to serving others.

Sinise recently released Resurrection and Rebirth, Parts 2 and 3while continuing to bring to life the music of their late son Mac Sinise – projects that honor Mac’s work and their shared passion for supporting our nation’s heroes through the mission of the Gary Sinise Foundation. Mac finished recording his first album Resurrection and rebirth until his death in January 2024.

His upcoming book Graceful Warrior: The True Story of a Son, Father and Family Who Bear Each Other Out in honor of Mac and his family’s healing journey, releasing November 10, 2026.
