Tadej Pogačar has a million-dollar Richard Mille watch for the Tour de France, but what are the chances he’ll actually wear it?

Luxury watch brand Richard Mille and bicycle manufacturer Colnago have teamed up to create a special edition watch based on Tadej Pogačar’s design, which will be its most expensive timepiece.

Known for his expensive watches, he often wears a $350,000 Richard Mille while racing the new RM 64-01 Tourbillon Colnago, pushing luxury even further, with a likely price tag of around $1 million or more.

As usual, the price has not been disclosed, but a similar Richard Milles hand-wound tourbillon sells for between $500,000 and $2 million, and even more for some special edition models.

Moreover, only 50 special edition units will be produced, which will only increase exclusivity and demand, and therefore the price.

However, unlike Richard Mille’s other watches, it is unlikely that Pogačar will wear this one on race days. BicycleRadar Colnago reportedly told them he would not be wearing the new item at the Tour de France due to “personal safety concerns” associated with wearing such an expensive item in public.

Watch

The watch itself is the result of a collaboration between Richard Mille and Colnago, which aims to “bring some of the Italian brand’s most recognizable codes into the world of haute horlogerie,” according to a joint press release.

Various aspects of the watch’s design are inspired by elements of Colnago bicycles.

“The skeletonized mechanism is reminiscent of the structure of a racing frame, with axles and components arranged according to a visual logic that evokes the tubes, geometry and drivetrain,” the brands said.

“The star-shaped parts of the bridges are inspired by the famous Gilco chambers, one of the most recognizable design features in Colnago history; micro overlays pay homage to the C Series, the iconic line of bicycles handcrafted in Cambiago; and the white, blue and gold color palette echoes the language of the brand’s most exclusive creations of the recent past.”

Colnago’s famous Ace of Clubs symbol also appears on the watch’s crown, the most obvious nod to the collaboration. The watch’s movement uses a hand-wound tourbillon mechanism, which is made of materials such as blue quartz, red gold and titanium.

Pogacar models the watch in promotional materials and on Richard Mille’s product page, which the brands say “strengthens the connection between project and competition at the highest level, where every detail can be decisive and where innovation, instinct and precision coexist in one sporting gesture.”

While the face of this new watch may be Colnago’s most famous ambassador, Richard Mille watches are worn by several other cyclists and athletes, including Mathieu van der Poel and Mark Cavendish.
