Archaeological find in the Danzig forest district

The archaeological find is a Bronze Age sword dating from 900–700 BC. The discovery belongs to Marcin Wisniewski. However, he did not travel with a metal detector through the Gdansk forestry on his own initiative, but participated in an official search of the forest, as stated on the official Facebook account of the Department of Monument Protection of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The detector is not new to archeology in Poland. In the past, Wisniewski was responsible for the discovery of a Bronze Age treasure, also in the forests of Gdańsk. After he informed the authorities about the discovery of the sword, employees of the Department of Archaeological Monuments examined it along with the finder.

This is not the first archaeological discovery in the area.

The size of the sword is about 60 centimeters. Its narrow metal shank may once have contained a handle made of wood, bone or antler—materials that have long since decayed. The bronze blade is covered with a green patina. However, researchers are still not releasing additional information about the ancient weapons.

Interestingly, this is not the first archaeological find of this type in the territory of the current forestry. In the 1920s, two bronze antenna swords were discovered in a peat bog in Rynazhevo. They were then transferred to the Provincial Museum in Gdańsk. But they were lost in World War II. The decision on which museum the current archaeological find will go to has not yet been made.
