It looks like Xbox is working on improving loading speeds when installing and updating console games.

Today (July 23), select members of the Alpha Skip-Ahead group within the Xbox Insider Program began testing a new update that aims to “optimize game installation and update speeds” by introducing an intelligent download client.

If testing goes well, the feature will likely be rolled out to the lower circles of Xbox Insider ahead of a possible public release in the coming weeks and months.

Here’s what Xbox engineers say:

Users will get a new feature to optimize game installation and update speeds through the introduction of an intelligent download client. Shortly after the game starts downloading, the client will check which content servers are available for installation or updating. It will then check the connection speed to each server pool and select the fastest available connection for that installation. The speed test will be repeated periodically during installation or upgrade to ensure that the client continues to use the fastest connection available.

As game installs continue to rise, we’ve gained a better understanding of loading speeds on consoles. We don’t know exactly how the current Xbox client works, but if this new smart client can help speed up installations and updates, we’re all for it. Right?

How do you feel about the update? Tell us in the comments section below.
