Anthropic has unveiled Opus 5, a new AI model that aims to deliver Fable 5-like performance at half the cost. The company emphasizes the effectiveness of common professional applications while focusing on enhanced security guarantees.
Anthropic is positioning Opus 5 as a more powerful evolution of Opus 4.8, introduced in May, and specifically aimed at office tasks and software development. According to Diane Penn, product manager, this new generation underscores the company’s rapid growth to make advanced artificial intelligence more widely available while maintaining high levels of performance.
Internal testing shows that Opus 5 is less likely than Fable 5 to exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities and is more resistant to manipulation attempts, meaning less stringent security measures are required. Fable 5, which launched in June, was temporarily withdrawn due to concerns from US authorities that foreign military intelligence agencies could abuse the model’s capabilities.
According to Diane Penn, Opus 5 offers a better compromise between performance and cost, while Fable 5 is intended for projects that run very autonomously and can last several days. When asked about the Kimi K3, an “open weight” model from Chinese company Moonshot, she also stressed that it remains to be seen whether the open weight models, which users can download and customize, can effectively handle complex projects in real-world applications.
