Sony is currently releasing a new system software update, version 26.05-13.60.00, for the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, which aside from UI optimizations and the usual system stability, does not bring any major feature changes.
Firmware version 26.05-13.60.00 is, as usual, around 1.2 GB in size and, according to officials, is focused on improving messaging and usability of selected OSD menus.
Backend maintenance instead of main releases
Patch fixes of this size are standard operating procedure for console manufacturers. Sony rarely uses small iterations for major interface changes, but primarily for system maintenance.
Under the hood, such patches perform two tasks:
- Security architecture: Closing potential gateways in the kernel structure from homebrew and jailbreak attempts.
- Troubleshooting: OS microcode adjustments to detect boot errors on the control panel.
Sony usually tests larger feature additions in advance through its own beta program. Since this patch was not preceded by a test run, the corresponding UI versions are pending until further notice. If you have an active Internet connection and automatic downloads, downloads occur automatically when you turn on your console.
Sony mainly uses these small updates for its own system architecture. In the background, the company patches security holes at the kernel level to close potential entry points for homebrewed software or exploits. This will protect the platform. For the end user, the visible added value remains zero.
So this remains a purely mandatory purpose of the system architecture. Updating to version 26.05-13.60.00 does not bring any new features for everyday life, but is necessary in order to continue to use PlayStation Network network services without restrictions.
