Volkswagen has opened pre-orders for the ID. Polo with a smaller 37 kWh battery for under $30,000. The cheaper model comes after Volkswagen’s new electric car received 25,000 orders weeks after it went on sale.

Identifier. The Polo is Volkswagen’s answer to Chinese EV brands like BYD and Chery, which are quickly gaining market share in the German automaker’s backyard.
After opening orders by ID. The Polo with a larger 52 kWh battery will arrive at the end of April, starting at €33,795 ($40,000). Volkswagen said a cheaper model with a smaller battery will go on sale by the end of the summer.

Identifier. The Polo Trend, with a 37 kWh battery, is now on sale in Europe from just €24,995, or around $29,000, with a WLTP range of 207 miles (334 km).

Life and Style variants are also available with a 37 kWh battery, starting at €29,195 ($33,500).
Volkswagen has announced a new, cheaper ID. The Polo is designed for daily commuting, running errands and driving around town. With DC fast charging up to 90 kW, ID. The Polo, with a 37 kWh battery, can charge from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes.
The base Trend includes standard safety and driver assistance features including Side Assist and Lane Assist.
As does a larger battery ID. The Polo, the entry-level model, features Volkswagen’s new interior design. The setup includes a 10-inch Digital Cockpit display and a new 13-inch Innovision infotainment screen, as well as additional physical buttons.
Upgrading to the Life trim adds features such as adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera system, park distance control and FrontT-Cross ride assist. It also features an automatic anti-dazzle mirror and a wireless smartphone charger.
The range-topping Style trim includes Volkswagen’s new IQ.LIGHT matrix LED headlights, illuminated LED light bar, 3D rear light clusters and illuminated VW badges front and rear.

Dimensions ID. The Polo is roughly the same size as the petrol model, but the EV version offers “significantly better use of space” thanks to its flat battery pack design.
Volkswagen ID. The Polo is available with three power options: 85 kW (114 hp), 99 kW (133 hp) and 155 kW (208 hp). A 166 kW (223 hp) variant of the GTI hot hatch will go on sale this autumn.

The 85kW and 99kW models use a smaller 37kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, while the 155kW variant uses a 52kWh NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) battery.
The smaller 37 kWh battery provides a WLTP range of 207 miles (334 km), while the larger 52 kWh battery offers up to 282 miles (454 km).
Volkswagen’s electric Polo is also one of the first cars to offer a vehicle-to-load (V2L) system as standard, allowing up to 3.6kW of power to be supplied to external devices, e-bikes and more.
While the new smaller battery ID. The Polo is already on sale, Volkswagen has also opened orders for the ID. Cross, the electric counterpart to its best-selling T-Cross in Europe this week. Volkswagen ID. The Cross starts at €27,995, or about $32,000 in Germany.
