Prince Ernst August of Hanover has not appeared in public with his wife Caroline of Hanover for 17 years. The last official appearance with his daughter Princess Alexandra of Hanover was even earlier.
69-year-old Princess Caroline had to endure various blows of fate at a young age. On October 9, 1980, she officially divorced 85-year-old Philippe Junot, and her first marriage to a financial broker lasted only two years. In September 1982, the death of her beloved mother Grace Kelly, †52, changed Caroline’s life forever; she suddenly had to take on the role of mother of the country – recently divorced and only 25 years old.

A year later, life got better again, Caroline married Stefano Casiraghi on December 29, 1983, and the dream couple had three children. But seven years later, Princess Caroline suffered the following fate: Stefano Casiraghi died at the age of just 30 on October 3, 1990, in a boat accident during the World Sea Championships off Cap Ferrat. Monaco was in shock.

In 1999, or rather on January 23, Princess Caroline felt ready for new love and married 72-year-old Prince Ernst August of Hanover, who soon gave birth to their daughter, 27-year-old Princess Alexandra of Hanover. Caroline was finally able to smile again and often appeared with her small child and the newlywed’s third husband at prestigious events in Monaco – until November 19, 2008.

Radio silence for 17 years
The 72-year-old has not appeared at an official event with his wife Caroline von Hannover for 17 years. The couple last appeared together on June 27, 2009, along with Prince Albert, 68, and Charlotte Casiraghi, 39, at the Monte Carlo International Equestrian Tournament in Port Hercule.
