Jonas Wingegaard crashes out of the Tour de France

Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the Tour de France after starting stage 15 in second place.

The driver of the Visma-Lease a Bike slid out of the roundabout and was seen with his right shoulder on the ground.

With the peloton waiting ahead, Wingegaard boarded the ambulance, ending his quest to win a third Tour de France title.

The incident occurred 21 km before the finish of stage 15 as Danish rider Visma-Lease a Bike’s team made every effort to prevent a breakaway.

The Danish rider started the day 4.30 behind Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), who already had four stage wins to his name. Vingegaard, however, remained undeterred, repeatedly stating in interviews that he was fighting to win.

Sunday’s Stage 15 was clearly what he had hoped for, with the final steep climb suiting his performance. And while we’ll never know if he could have challenged Pogačar on the climb up the Plateau de Solezon, he was definitely going to try.

The team had a clear plan to send riders up the road, both of whom were caught and riding ahead when the incident occurred. While Victor Kampenaerts was leading at the roundabout, Vingegaard was fourth wheel and appeared to clip the curb on the exit.

Vingegaard, who won the Tour de France overall in 2022 and 2023, also won the Vuelta a España last year, completing the Grand Tour trilogy in May by winning the Giro d’Italia.

This is the first time he has refused a Grand Tour.

Vingegaard’s exit changes the complexion of the race and although Pogačar looked safe in the yellow jersey, the battle for the podium is losing a key figure with the likes of Paul Seixas, Remco Evenepoel, Florian Lipowitz and Juan Ayuso suddenly targeting second place.
