Some Facebook and Instagram users reported international outages Sunday that left them unable to access their feeds, according to two internet watchdogs and a CNN review of the platforms.
More than 23,000 users reported problems with Facebook in the United States alone between 3:44 a.m. and 5:02 a.m. ET on Sunday morning, after which the number of reports dropped sharply, according to DownDetector, which tracks Internet services.
During the same period, at least 18,000 reports indicated problems with Instagram in the US, according to DownDetector.
Internet watchdog NetBlocks, which monitors internet access around the world, noted that Facebook and Instagram users experienced internet outages around the world unrelated to any country-level internet outages.
CNN has contacted Meta, the parent company of the two social networks, for comment.
During the outage, affected Facebook users received an error message saying their account was “currently unavailable due to a problem with the site” and told them to try logging in again “in a few minutes.”
WhatsApp, which is also owned by Meta, did not seem to encounter any problems during the outage.
