Chances for Gulf tropical development increase
Chances for development in the Gulf countries are growing.
Your Gulf Coast storm team is closely monitoring an area of interest in the eastern Gulf. As of 8 a.m. Saturday, the latest chances for development are 20 percent within the next 48 hours and 30 percent within the next seven days.
While nothing has yet formed, disorganized showers and thunderstorms appear. This is connected to the upper level low pressure system. Gradual development is possible as this system drifts north over the next few days. Regardless of developments, this will result in heavy rainfall across the Florida peninsula.
Impact on Southwest Florida
Direct impacts to southwest Florida are unlikely. While the disturbance will move north over the weekend, it will bring heavy rain to much of the state, including locally here along the Gulf Coast. The heaviest amounts of precipitation will likely occur in northern Florida and the Panhandle.
As more moisture moves into the region, Southwest Florida can expect a slightly higher chance of rain. Expect intermittent showers to return to the Gulf Coast this weekend, although no days will be heavy.
While the chances of development remain low at this time, if this develops into a tropical storm, the next name on the list would be Tropical Storm Bertha. Be sure to check back often as we monitor any indirect impacts on the Gulf Coast.
