Marcus Rashford’s £40 million ($53.1 million; €47.1 million) release clause from Manchester United has expired, meaning any sale will now have to be negotiated.
The 28-year-old, who featured for England at the World Cup, will now, under current circumstances, return to training with other teammates who competed in the latter stages of the tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, who had the option to make the move permanent for €30 million but decided against it.
Any offers for the striker will now be considered by all parties as he is otherwise contracted at Old Trafford until 2028.
The exit clause was not available to United’s two biggest rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool.
Sources familiar with the situation, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said Athletic that the player had rejected offers, some of which were more lucrative than his current deal.
Rashford made 49 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists.
His role at Barcelona next season is likely to be filled by his England teammate Anthony Gordon following his €80 million move from Newcastle United.
Rashford came through United’s academy and made over 400 appearances for his boyhood club.
He has scored 138 goals since his debut in February 2016, but has not played for the club since December 2024.
