The change in squad worked wonders for India as they finally managed to end their losing streak in recent weeks with a win over England. India handed Ireland a historic 2-0 T20I series win before losing to England 4-0, also in the T20I format.
However, as the focus shifted to ODI cricket, the team strengthened with the return of Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
While Bumrah kept the focus early with a stellar bowling spell to finish with 1/31 and Rohit and Kohli left wicketless which provided some assistance to the bowlers, it was India captain Gill who led the team’s attack and made significant strides in the process.
Before retiring due to injury with an 80* off 75 balls, Gill hit 11 fours and a six to put India on course for the chase against England. This marks a 12-point increase in Gill’s ranking and the batter is now just 11 ranking points behind Daryl Mitchell, who is ranked number one in the ODI rankings.
Mitchell has 93 runs in the first two games of the ODI series against the West Indies and the stage is set for the two batters to battle each other for the top spot.
