A woman has appeared in court charged with arson after a major fire broke out on moorland in Greater Manchester.
Shania Care-Slade, 20, of Market Street, Hyde, was charged with aggravated arson, reckless endangerment and dangerous driving.
She was remanded in custody at Manchester Magistrates’ Court and appeared at Manchester Crown Court on August 18.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said the Dove Stone Reservoir fire in Greenfield, Saddleworth, which broke out on Saturday, “remains active but is currently in a stable condition with approximately 70 firefighters, 11 fire engines and four bushfire units continuing to make progress across the area.”
Ben Levy, GMFRS regional manager, said: “I expect our firefighters will be out on these moors for a few days, I’m confident of that – no significant rainfall is forecast and temperatures will remain high.”
He added: “Where our firefighters are, it’s very steep and shaky underfoot.
“They carry heavy equipment and the water they want to use is not there. “Water is not our only way to put out these fires, we have teams of specialists out there doing everything they can to get it under control.”
The fire, which was declared a major incident, sent huge plumes of smoke for miles across the region. The effects of the smoke can be felt for miles.
