The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the central government to ensure that climate activist Sonam Wangchuck’s health is checked daily by doctors.
The court said that in view of his deteriorating health, if any treatment was required, it should be provided by the government.
A bench comprising High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia gave this direction during the hearing of the PIL, which sought immediate treatment of Wangchuk.
According to Live Law, the court said: “The life of every citizen is precious and the government must make every possible effort to save it.”
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the central government, assured the court that government doctors and medical experts are constantly checking Wangchuck’s health.
According to him, based on the doctors’ conclusions, appropriate treatment will be prescribed if necessary.
To this, the court said: “We appreciate the position of the Solicitor General and direct that Wangchuk’s health be examined by doctors every day and necessary treatment be provided.”
Following this, the court heard a PIL filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini.
Saini asked the court to direct the Central and Delhi governments to immediately take Wangchuk to a hospital and provide him with necessary treatment. If necessary, they should also be force fed.
The petition also sought direction to the government to ensure the safety of Wangchuck’s life and health.
It is noteworthy that Wangchuk began a hunger strike on June 28. Regarding Sonam Wangchuk’s health, senior general practitioner Dr. Satish Lamba released the 19th day health bulletin.
The doctor said that by the 19th day of fasting, Sonam Wangchuk’s weight dropped by more than 9 kilograms. However, the amount of water in his body remains normal at this time.
