Conor Chaplin celebrates scoring a goal for Portsmouth

Leicester City have made former Ipswich Town striker Conor Chaplin their first signing since relegation to League One.

The 29-year-old moves to the King Power Stadium as a free agent on a three-year deal, having been released by Suffolk earlier in the summer.

Chaplin, who helped Ipswich achieve promotion to the Championship and Premier League during his time at Portman Road, spent much of last season on loan at Portsmouth.

He joins a Leicester team that has suffered back-to-back relegations to drop into League One, a level at which Chaplin was top scorer with 26 goals for Ipswich just four seasons ago.

The former Coventry City and Barnsley striker said he was “grateful for the opportunity” to play for the 2016 Premier League champions.

Chaplin’s addition is the first to be made during Leicester’s summer rebuild, which has so far been focused on transforming an underperforming squad by releasing a number of high-paid players as well as profitable youngsters.

Former England midfielder Harry Winks was sold to Italian club Cagliari earlier in the week, while strikers Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka and captain Ricardo Pereira were among the out-of-contract players allowed to leave the club following relegation from the Championship.

Financial pressure on the club, which was hit with penalty points last season for historical spending breaches, has also necessitated other sales, the most high-profile of which was the departure of 17-year-old Jeremy Monga to Manchester City.
