SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for “Queens,” the Season 1 finale of Maximum Fun Guaranteed, now streaming on Apple TV.
Just when we think Paula Saunders has finally gotten her life back on track, things take a turn for the worse again.
During the first season of Apple TV’s Maximum Fun Guaranteed, Paula (Tatiana Maslany) had to deal with some huge challenges. After Trevor (Brandon Flynn), the sex worker she was paying, was apparently murdered on screen, Paula tried to solve the crime and free herself from the web of blackmailers who had made her life hell. In the midst of all this, she tries to retain custody of her daughter Hazel (Nola Wallace), even though her ex Carl and his new wife Mallory (Jake Johnson and Jesse Hodges) want to move the family to Boise.
Planting season is upon us and it seems like everything is decided! Paula wins her custody hearing despite her erratic behavior lately, and the danger she was exposed to has faded into the background. Shadowy underworld figures, apparently the same ones who set in motion the entire web of villainy that Paula is immersed in, force Frank (Murray Bartlett), Paula’s main antagonist, to jump off a roof with a fake suicide note admitting to killing Trevor, all the loose ends seeming tied up. Detective Sofia Gonzalez (Dolly de Leon) believes there’s more to the story, but Paula, free of suspicion and ready to move on, doesn’t care. “I don’t know anything that makes sense!” Paula tells Detective Gonzalez, closing the door on her involvement in the police investigation. She goes on to say that she’s going to celebrate her victories and even go on a date (she’s circling Steve, the parent played by Raymond Lee). “I’m giving up everything else, and maybe you should too.”
