Every generation sooner or later finds a player who becomes a role model.
For almost two decades, football belonged to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two icons who rewrote almost every record imaginable.
Now, as that era slowly comes to an end, the spotlight has shifted to the next batch of superstars.
For many, Kylian Mbappe was the first player to truly take on this responsibility after bursting onto the scene with Monaco in 2016.
Nearly ten years later, another teenager begins to cause the same excitement.
This teenager is Lamin Yamal.
At just 19 years old, the Barcelona striker has already become one of the faces of world football.
His confidence divides opinion, but those who watch him every week know the difference between confidence and arrogance.
Yamal plays with the freedom of a man who believes he belongs on football’s biggest stage, and his performances so far have confirmed that belief.
Naturally, it became impossible to avoid comparisons with Mbappe.
Numbers tell one story, but not the whole story.
From a purely statistical point of view, Yamal started his career in the major leagues successfully.

By the age of 19, the Barcelona striker had already played 182 senior matches for club and country, scoring 56 goals and providing 64 assists.
This gives him an astonishing 120 goals scored, with him averaging a goal or assist every 111 minutes.
Mbappe’s numbers paint a different picture.
Before turning 20, the French superstar made 90 senior appearances, scoring 39 goals and providing 29 assists for a total of 68 goals.
Although his overall performance was lower, his efficiency in front of goal was exceptional, scoring on average every 138 minutes without conceding a single penalty.
These numbers immediately highlight one of the biggest differences between the two players.
Yamal appeared in many more matches because Barcelona entrusted him with first-team responsibility at the incredibly young age of 15.
Instead of being promoted to elite football, he became one of the club’s attacking leaders, taking on creative responsibility alongside established national team players.
Meanwhile, Mbappe’s rise has been built on relentless hitting. Every touch in the penalty area felt decisive and his ability to convert chances at such a young age helped Monaco become one of Europe’s biggest names before he earned his star-studded move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Two teenagers, two different paths to greatness
Comparing raw statistics without context can often be misleading.
| Player | Games | Goals | helps | Goal contribution | Minutes per goal | Minutes per goal or assist |
| Lamin Yamal | 182 | 56 | 64 | 120 | 238 | 111 |
| Kylian Mbappe | 90 | 39 | 29 | 68 | 138 | 79 |
By the time he turned 19, Mbappe had already won Ligue 1, played a starring role in Monaco’s memorable run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals and secured one of the biggest transfers in football history with his move to PSG.
A few months later he won the World Cup with France, changing the trajectory of his career forever.
Yamal’s path turned out differently. He already boasts three La Liga titles, a European Championship win with Spain and a growing list of individual accolades that mark his rapid rise to the top.
Moreover, His influence goes beyond scoring.
At Barcelona, Yamal is already the player his teammates actively seek out when games get tough. This level of responsibility is exceptionally rare for someone who just recently celebrated her 19th birthday.
The comparison should excite fans, not divide them.
Football has a habit of turning each generation’s talent into a debate.
Who’s better? Who achieved more? Who will have a great career?

These questions are inevitable, but perhaps they also miss the bigger picture.
Mbappe and Yamal became top players thanks to completely different strengths.
The Frenchman terrified defenders from the start with his explosive acceleration and merciless goal-scoring ability.
Yamal, meanwhile, controls the matches through imagination, creativity and the ability to make an extraordinary appearance routine.
One established himself as the most outstanding teenage goalscorer of his era, while the other became perhaps the most gifted teenager to shape the game.
Therefore, fans should not repeat the mistake they made with Messi and Ronaldo.
This time it shouldn’t be Yamal versus Mbappe. Rather, it should be Yamal and Mbappe. Let’s use the talent while we can.
