Big picture: Shreyas Iyer hopes for first win
India’s role in helping small cricket economies generate income through television rights usually dominates conversations ahead of the Zimbabwe tour. But series defeats to Ireland and England have shifted the debate towards India’s T20I woes and team combinations. When they arrived in Zimbabwe two years ago, they were led by Shubman Gill. Now T20I is the only format that does not feature Gill. The captaincy mantle was handed over from Suryakumar Yadav to Shreyas Iyer, who had never won a game as captain after seven games.
India’s group of players for the Zimbabwe tour is much the same as the one that played in Ireland and England, minus Sanju Samson, and they will want to get back to winning ways. But Iyer may be the first to remind his team that Zimbabwe, in their current form, are not an underdog.
Having reached the Super Eight at the T20 World Cup earlier this year, Zimbabwe built on that success by defeating Bangladesh in the one-off Test and ODI series. Although they suffered a setback in the T20Is, there were enough signs of some rejuvenation to carry them forward ahead of next year’s ODI World Cup, which returns to Africa after 24 years.
As expected, there is a lot of chatter surrounding Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The Castle Corner faithful would have seen more than a glimpse of him earlier this year during the Under-19 World Cup. While his debut in England was far from ideal, a low-key tour like this, led by VVS Laxman and his support staff, could be the tonic he needs to get started.
There is also a lot of excitement surrounding India’s bristling young bowling line-up, each of whom is capable of capturing the imagination. Of these, Mayank Yadav and Ashok Sharma are particularly promising. This is a chance for them to do a lot of work to increase the number of bowlers in India.
For the second year in a row, Zimbabwe has had a decent home season. And that meant a lot more playing time than they were used to. Expectations for recent performances are at an all-time high. Sikandar Raza’s men came across India once during the 2024 tour. Will they now be able to expose a slightly vulnerable team searching for the right formula?

Tilak Varma hit a quickfire half-century in the fifth T20I against England, but questions continue to be asked about his batting rate in the middle overs, especially against spin. His average of 21.6 and strike rate of 108.54 against spin are the worst figures among Indian batters who have faced at least 100 balls in T20 this year. He is vice-captain and may be insulated from some of the pressure of being out, but he will need a few runs to maintain that belief.Wesley Madhever returns to the T20I setup after more than a year in the desert. A strike rate of 114 in 74 innings doesn’t necessarily inspire much confidence, but he will be hoping for some form from the ODIs and one-off Test against Bangladesh. That he is a regular in the Zimbabwe A team is a sign of the selectors’ confidence in him. Can he justify it?
Team news: Shumba drops out of the series
Batter Milton Shumba was ruled out of the series with a right hamstring injury and was replaced in the lineup by Innocent Kaya. Left-arm fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri, who missed the T20I tournament in Bangladesh due to disappointment, is set to make a comeback. Madhevere will compete with Dion Myers for the top-tier berth, while Wellington Masakaza could bolster the lower-tier berth. Tarawa Tsige may have to wait for his chance.

Rinku Singh could be back at number six and Harsh Dubey could be the second all-rounder. If Dubey plays, he will likely be the only player unless India misses a fast bowler and uses Shivam Dube as the third seamer. Three of Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma are likely to start if India opts for a quick batting line-up.

Both captains expect decent speed and scoring on the surface. Winter conditions in Harare may give fast bowlers a better chance of winning. In the recently concluded series, Bangladesh’s 186 was their highest in six innings played. Expect higher totals. The weather is expected to be clear and sunny.
