In the latest iOS 27 developer beta, Apple is giving testers an early look at one of Siri’s upcoming AI-powered improvements: the ability to adjust the speed and expressiveness of the AI assistant’s speech. In iOS 27 beta 3, released today, Apple included voice control for “Pace” and “Expressiveness,” which were previously marked as “Coming Soon” in the first developer betas.
The update is part of Apple’s broader efforts to make Siri more natural and personal as it overhauls the assistant based on generative artificial intelligence. Like ChatGPT and other companies offering AI voice assistants, allowing users to customize how the AI sounds is an important aspect of helping people connect with the new technology.
However, ChatGPT’s voice customization capabilities allow users to go even further with the ability to adjust the AI’s warmth and enthusiasm was rolled up will be released in December 2025 along with options to customize the base style and tone. The latter allows users to customize the OpenAI assistant to be more friendly, professional, outspoken or quirky, among other styles. This is reflected not only in the way ChatGPT speaks, but also in the way it presents information to the user.
First introduced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 26) in June, Siri Voice Control allows users to personalize their Siri experience rather than simply choosing an assistant that sounds either male or female. Beta testers will now be able to switch between different voices with different accents, and then use sliders to change how slow or fast Siri speaks and how much human emotion her voice conveys.
As you make changes, Siri will practice saying some common phrases, such as “You have one new message,” so you can get a feel for what different voices sound like.
The AI version of Siri is deeply integrated into the updated version of iOS, where it will allow iPhone owners to initiate conversations by speaking, swiping down the dynamic island at the top of the screen and typing, pressing the phone’s side button, or even using the all-new standalone Siri app.
iOS 27 beta 3 also comes with other smaller updates, including an updated Reminders app icon. (It’s worth noting that some people on the X have also reported losing access to the new Siri after the update, or that their phone starts indexing their data again—usually the first step in optimizing Siri AI for search.)
