Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Bianca Andreescu will only attend the All England Club.

Shapovalov, ranked 41st in the world, was forced to retire after apparently suffering a shoulder injury during his first-round match against Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta on Monday.

After losing the first set 6-3, the 27-year-old Ontario resident was trailing and serving at 7-8 during the second-set tiebreaker when he asked for intervention from a sports therapist. After a brief review, the Canadian walked up to the judge’s chair and signaled his retirement.

The exact nature and severity of the Maple Leaf’s injury is currently unknown.

Then, hours later, Andreescu, the qualifier ranked 180th in the world, fell short and lost 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) to China’s Zhang Shuai on Court No. 6.

At about 11:25 a.m. at court no. 2, Felix Auger-Aliassime, the third seed, will play his first round match against Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko (99e).
