What did China say about India's UN membership? Four powerful countries are already there, National Hindi News

Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has launched a campaign for India’s temporary membership in the UN Security Council. Now China has also responded to this claim by India. The special feature is that China is a member with veto power.

Now China has also responded to India’s announcement of temporary membership in the UNSC, that is, the UN Security Council. The neighboring country said it was looking into such reports. The special thing is that many large countries already support India. China’s announcement comes as Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar launches a publicity campaign.

What did China say?

China on Thursday said it has taken note of reports related to India’s bid for temporary membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-2029 term. Asked about China’s position on India’s announcement to seek non-permanent membership of the Security Council, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press conference here: “China has taken note of the relevant news.”

What did Jaishankar say?

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar on Monday launched India’s official campaign for non-permanent membership of the Security Council at an event held at the United Nations headquarters. The program was attended by ambassadors, diplomats and officials from different countries.

Jaishankar, in his address, said India’s approach to the United Nations is based on “peace that seeks inclusive progress through norms, trust and integrity.” He also mentioned in detail the priorities for India’s possible tenure on the Security Council.

China does not support India

China is among the five permanent veto-wielding members of the Security Council but has not yet backed India’s demands. In contrast, the other four countries of the five permanent members – the US, UK, Russia and France – have clearly supported India’s permanent membership in the post-reform UN Security Council.

Which country does it compete with?

Elections to the Security Council for the period 2028-2029 will be held in June next year. At the same time, there will be a struggle between India and Tajikistan for the sole place in the Asia-Pacific Group.

India last became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2021-22. This was India’s eighth term in the powerful 15-member United Nations body. India was previously a member of the Security Council in 1950–1951, 1967–1968, 1972–1973, 1977–1978, 1984–1985, 1991–1992 and 2011–2012.

There have been no significant improvements in the Security Council.

India says the 80-year-old structure of the UN Security Council is not suitable for solving current problems. And that is why this global organization has not proven effective in ending the human suffering caused by ongoing conflicts around the world. India also said the global financial system must also change to better suit the priorities of developing countries.

Permanent Representative Ambassador Harish Parvataneni said on Tuesday: “In recent years, people’s perception of the United Nations has become negative. The main reason for this is that the Security Council has failed to intervene effectively in the ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world.
