A tragic end to Thorstein Train’s dream tour: after two stages in the yellow jersey and a serious fall, the Tour of France is over for the unlikely man from Norway.

Train suffered a concussion and several broken ribs in a crash on the Tourmalet descent, his Uno-X Mobility team announced Thursday evening (July 9, 2026). Thus, the 30-year-old will not be at the start of the seventh stage.

Train hung onto the back wheel of his teammate Anders Johannessen and fell hard. He was then examined by a doctor on the road and completed the stage.

At the finish he lost his first position in the overall standings, clearly behind defending champion Tadej Pogačar. After his fantastic solo win and lesson for the competition, he still had some nice words for his predecessor in the yellow jersey. “I heard that Thorstein fell. I hope he’s okay. I would prefer him to keep the jersey,” Pogacar said.

All Train’s hopes are dashed

“This is really not the ending we wanted for this yellow adventure,” said Uno-X Mobility team leader Thor Hushovd. “Thorstein gave the team a historic moment and we will always be proud of what he and the whole team have achieved over the past few days. Of course, it’s a shame to leave the race in this way, but the most important thing now is that Thorstein gets the care and rest he needs.”

In the fourth stage, Train took the yellow jersey as part of the leading group. Even before the start of the sixth stage, which took the riders through the Pyrenees, he had hopes of defending first position thanks to a decent lead.
