How to play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess the hidden five-letter word in six tries or less. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:

  • Green: The letter is in the word and in the right place.
  • Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong place.
  • Grey: There are no letters in the word at all.

Use these tips to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordle users also play competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot, or even me, your humble narrator. See Wordle competition rules at the end of this post.

Today’s Wordle Tips and Answers

Wordle Bot Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordle score using Wordle Bot right here.

STAIN was a bad initial guess: I was left with 342 words, but AMORE (just one of two non-English words I used in today’s Wordle) cut that number down to six.

I’ve been thinking about Jason Momoa lately for two reasons. First of all, I’m on this crazy health and strength building course and my goal is to become “Viking Jason Momoa” (which, yeah, probably won’t happen, but a boy can dream). Secondly, because of this video I just watched:

So when I thought about ALOHA, it seemed like a natural choice. Luckily for me, and surprisingly, it was Wordle!

The bot and I evened the score again, receiving 1 point for guessing out of three and 0 for a draw. Total for July now:

Eric: 12 points

Wordle-bot: 20 points

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • A guess of 1 is worth 3 points; guessing 2 is worth 2 points; guessing out of 3 is worth 1 point; guessing 4 is scored 0 points; guess by 5 – -1 point; guessing 6 is -2 points, and missing a word is -3 points.
  • If you defeat your opponent, you will receive 1 point. If you tie the score, you will receive 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you will receive -1 point. Add this to get your result. Keep a daily running score or just play to get a new score every day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running count or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

“Aloha” comes from the Hawaiian language. It is often analyzed as alo (“presence”, “foreground” or “separation”) + ha (“breath of life”). Although the word “aloha” is usually translated as “hello” or “goodbye”, in its broader sense the word “aloha” means love, compassion, peace, affection and mutual respect. Its deeper cultural meaning reflects the spirit of kindness and humanity.
